Self-initiated Manga Coloring – Mermaid Saga

Hand Embroidery, Clip Studio Paint Pro,

I am always looking for ways that I can explore and combine mediums, so I wanted to try a hybrid manga panel coloring with hand embroidered details. I used the colored pencil brushes in Clip Studio Paint Pro to give a textured & saturated look to the colors.

Self-initiated Manga Coloring – Gundam Origin

Clip Studio Paint Pro, Illustration by Yoshikazu Yasuhiko

When I discovered this manga series, I was both floored and inspired by the watercolor art! It was immediately refreshing to see and it left an impression on me. With this manga page coloring, I wanted to emulate the watercolor look of the original, using watercolor brushes in Clip Studio Paint Pro. I love how the watercolor is a nice change to the smooth digital look that most Western comics have.

Self-initiated Manga Coloring – Opus

Clip Studio Paint Pro, Illustration by Satoshi Kon

I absolutely love Kon's films and manga! From the writing, to the meta-fiction layered story and the incredible use of panels, this story is one that will inspire me forever. I wanted to enhance the panels by using analogous colors with a pop of red to make the main character stand out. I chose this page because I knew it would be a challenging one to color.

After reading this manga, I was immediately inspired to color some panels from it. This panel is another exploration of hand embroidery and digital coloring using colored pencil brushes in Clip Studio Paint Pro. With this panel, I challenged myself to add in even more hand embroidered details.

Self-initiated Manga Coloring – Witch Hat Atelier

Clip Studio Paint Pro, Illustration by Kamome Shirahama

Who doesn't love magic? When I read the first volume of

this manga I was hooked! I used watercolor brushes in Clip Studio Paint Pro to showcase the detailed line drawings, as well as emulate the watercolor art featured on the cover of each volume.

Self-initiated Manga Coloring – Opus

Clip Studio Paint Pro, Illustration by Satoshi Kon

Another page from Kon's Opus manga. I chose this page because it evokes a major theme of the story, the blurring of fiction and reality. I used complimentary colors to add impact to the image, along with gouache and ink brushes to add texture using Clip Studio Paint Pro.

Another page from the manga Witch Hat Atelier. I continued my use of watercolor brushes in Clip Studio Paint Pro, to add soft blended color to the detailed line art.

Self-initiated Manga Coloring – Gundam Origin

Another page from the Gundam Origin manga. I chose this page to showcase one of the main gundams of the story, as well as using color for maximum impact. I put in the smoke to add my own flair to the image.

A fully colored team pin-up page. This was a fun one to color.

Self-initiated Manga Coloring – Gundam Origin

Another page from the Gundam Origin manga. I chose this page because I knew all of the bits and pieces would make it very challenging. I added in my own touch with the yellow to orange gradient.
